    LANDLORDS MUST ENSURE SAFE FENCING

It’s a disturbing fact that the family home is the most common place for children to be injured. Far too often, you hear and read about toddlers falling into swimming pools, getting out onto driveways, or being mauled by dangerous dogs.

According to Warren Smith of Jim’s Fencing Australia, the most frustrating aspect of these three common causes of childhood injury, is that in most cases they could be avoided by simply having the right fencing installed.

A recent high-profile court case in Melbourne highlights how important it is for owners of investment properties to have legally compliant fencing.

Warren Smith says at this time of year it’s extremely important that pool owners check their pool fences are secure and that the gates are not faulty.

“Hinges and locking mechanisms need to be in correct working order. It’s unbelievable the amount of pool fences we see that haven’t been maintained and can pose a serious threat. I mean what’s the point of having a pool fence if a child can easily open the gate and gain access to the pool area?”

He also said the driveway area can be just as dangerous as a pool and that parents should consider a fence and safety-gate to secure this area.

“There has been a terrible spate of accidents where children have been able to access a driveway and this has resulted in tragedy.”

Another area of concern is dangerous dogs getting into or out of properties.

“We are able to dog-proof a yard. We can install no-dig fences and no-climb fences that will prevent even the most determined animal from getting into or out of your yard.”

Warren Smith said there are legal requirements for home owners with pools and dangerous dogs, but the laws vary depending on where you live.

“Part of the problem is the lack of standardization around the country. There are different rules and regulations concerning fences for each council and State as to what the requirements are. But homeowners and landlords need to take responsibility to ensure the security of their property. Safety and security is what fencing is all about,” Warren Smith said.
